Forecast Discussion
The National Weather Service in Charleston, WV has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County until Sunday at 8 am. Repeated rounds of soaking rain over the next several days will result in rainfall totals around 4-6 inches, which may cause widespread flooding of streams, creeks, and rivers. Stay tuned over the coming days for more information.
In addition, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe weather for Athens tomorrow. The main threats associated with stronger storms will be damaging winds and large hail, although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Today will be a mild day with a high near 60°F and sunshine as temperatures recover from the cold front that passed through Sunday night. Tomorrow, however, a warm front associated with a strong low pressure system will push northward into the region, allowing for warm, moist air from the south to gush in, and as a result, highs will be around 80°F. This will result in an unstable environment ahead of the system’s cold front. However, showers and thunderstorms associated with that front will not make their way through until late Wednesday night, but nevertheless, even as we lose daytime heating, gusty winds, hail, and a spin-up tornado are all possible with those storms. Stay weather aware tomorrow night and make sure you have multiple ways of receiving severe weather alerts should one be issued for your area.
After this event passes, the rest of the work week and early part of the weekend look very wet. A stationary front will stall over much of the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys, bringing prolonged periods of rain, which could be heavy at times. This will raise significant flooding concerns, so again, make sure you are staying up-to-date on the forecast for the next several days, and have a plan if flash flooding were to occur.
