Forecast Discussion

A Tornado Watch is in effect for Athens, OH until 3:00am Saturday the 17th.

The National Weather Service has also issued an Enhanced Risk for severe weather tonight that includes Athens County. The Hazardous Weather Outlook issued states: Rounds of strong to severe storms are expected today into tonight. Damaging winds are the main threat, though large hail and tornadoes could also occur. Heavier downpours or training thunderstorms may also cause flash flooding, particularly in already saturated areas.

Please stay weather aware tonight!

This severe weather is due to a low-pressure system moving eastward, bringing a chance for a severe weather outbreak through the Ohio Valley. Clouds will be increasing tonight and wind gusts could reach 30 mph. Rainfall will be heavy and these storms have a chance to be severe. The threats for tonight include strong winds, large hail, and the possibility for tornados. Athens, OH stands in the 5% probability of a tornado, 30% probability of damaging thunderstorm winds or wind gusts of 50 knots (~57 mph) or higher, and 15% probability of one inch diameter hail or larger; this is all within 25 miles of a point.

As the cold front falls behind come late Saturday, temperatures will fall slightly to the upper 70s, but conditions will stay pleasant and sunny for a couple days, giving us a taste of summer, before rain chances start back up Tuesday!
