Forecast Discussion
As the previous low pressure system continues to pull away from the region, clouds will continue to taper off into the evening hours, with mainly clear skies resulting by tomorrow morning. However, the moisture remaining in the atmosphere from today’s precipitation will condense into some areas of patchy fog as temperatures cool overnight. As the sun comes up, any areas of fog should quickly evaporate, and as a subtle ridge of high pressure establishes itself over the eastern US, sunny and warmer conditions will set up for the day Thursday. However, by Friday, changes will again be on the horizon as an upper-level shortwave trough intrudes into the Great Lakes. This disturbance will bring a sharp Arctic front through the region Friday night, dropping the temperature abruptly from the mid 50s Friday evening into the 20s by early Saturday. All the while, an area of low pressure is forecast to develop across the Mid-South and track near the central Appalachians, bringing moisture into this Arctic airmass. This will bring rain quickly changing to snow Friday night into Saturday, with accumulating snow likely. The forecast on accumulations and impacts is complicated given the uncertainty with the track of the system, as well as how efficiently snow can stick given the warm antecedent conditions. Scenarios range from a lighter snow that mostly melts on reaching the warm ground to a significant storm that brings several inches of accumulation. Regardless of exactly what pans out, at least a couple inches of snow are likely to fall during this timeframe, while plummeting ground and road temperatures lead to potential travel impacts Saturday. Anomalous, bitter winter cold follows the system for the remainder of the weekend. Be sure to stay tuned on the latest forecast updates as the system draws closer!
