Forecast Discussion

Currently, there is an upper-level cut-off low sitting over the southeastern United States with a stationary frontal boundary at the surface. Due to this stalling of a system, it will provide forcing and uplift to provide clouds and chances of precipitation through Tuesday. Major Hurricane Helene made landfall just east of Tallahassee, Florida expected to track NNE to the Tennessee Valley. The outer bands of this tropical system will bring widespread rain for much of the morning and afternoon with rain being heavy at times. Later in the evening, the rain will become more scattered with a chance of embedded thunderstorms. Due to Helene’s fast moving pace and size, Friday will see windy conditions with gusts up to 35 mph at times as pressure differences remain tightly packed.

Clouds will clear a bit late Friday night into Saturday morning giving way to partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies once Helene moves west. This is because Helene is in proximity with the upper-level low and both will begin rotating around a common center. Eventually, the upper-level low and Helene will merge and this cut-off low will continue to provide rain chances the rest of the weekend into early next week. The cut-off low will slowly progress eastward into early next week as a cold front moves through Tuesday night into Wednesday as moisture begins to decrease and dry conditions move in.
