Technical Forecast Discussion
Key Messages:
- Cold and gusty conditions expected Thursday through Saturday.
- Rain/ snow mix possible Saturday evening into Sunday as well as Tuesday.
- Stable conditions return by Wednesday next week.
Short-Term Forecast (Thursday 11/27/2025 through Saturday 11/29/2025):
The surface low that’s been bringing the state unsettled weather and gusty winds is expected to fully exit the region by Friday. Gusty winds will likely continue Thursday and Friday as a tight pressure gradient lingers from this surface low. Temperatures will remain chilly as multiple troughs sit over the state, bringing cold air down from Canada. Zonal flow will follow a weakening trough Friday, enhancing stable conditions. 500 mb heights will begin to rise, reinforcing this stabilization as high-pressure moves in. Dry air is expected to remain through Thursday and Friday, keeping skies clear, but moisture aloft may move through and allow clouds to develop. This moisture may bring snow flurries late Saturday evening, but most precipitation will likely be seen in the long-term.
Long-Term Forecast (Sunday 11/30/2025 through Wednesday 12/03/2025):
Precipitation may make yet another return come Sunday. We may see some snow flurries Saturday evening, but the bulk of the precipitation, transitioning into rain at this time, will occur in the morning hours Sunday. The complete timing of how long we may see rain Sunday morning is still unclear, but at this moment, it wouldn’t be surprising if rain interrupts any early morning plans. Another surface low will make its way through with an associated cold front to move over the state, dropping our temperatures once more. A shortwave could move over the state by Tuesday, and in combination of an abundance of moisture, we may see some more precipitation Tuesday. Alongside this shortwave, 500 mb heights are likely to drop as we see some instability develop. Similarly to Sunday, it is too early to tell the complete timing and precipitation type, but we may see some rain-snow mix early Tuesday. Temperatures will likely remain in the mid-30s, much like the short-term, though we, thankfully, aren’t likely to deal with gusty winds alongside it. Conditions are set to stabilize by Wednesday and possibly for the remainder of the week.
