Tonight, we will see somewhat pleasant weather as the current pattern persists. Starting tomorrow, however, more active weather will be likely over the next couple of days as moisture and instability come together for some isolated pop-up showers and thunderstorms. The storms will taper off into the evening, but then some overnight showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday night. Thankfully, nothing organized or severe is expected to form for tomorrow. On Sunday, a cold front is expected to make its way through the region sometime in the morning, bringing more chances for showers and thunderstorms. Currently, the Storm Prediction Center has Athens placed under a Marginal Risk for severe weather. The main threats are likely to be strong wind gusts, some hail, and localized flash flooding due to heavy rainfall, as detailed in the National Weather Service’s Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region.

The extended forecast looks much more pleasant as a shortwave ridge will take place for a day or two with surface high pressure, despite this very large trough in the upper levels. No precipitation is expected Monday and Tuesday, and temperatures are expected to climb after this frontal passage and keep things nice through at least Tuesday. On Wednesday, a slight chance of rain showers is anticipated to return, but stay tuned to later forecasts as we get closer to next week!
