Athens is under a Slight Risk yet again for severe weather today. The main threats from this setup will be damaging wind gusts and hail, but there is a conditional tornado threat present with some storms today. The positively tilted trough moving through the region is responsible for today’s weather setup. The low-pressure system associated with this trough is becoming very mature and will form an occlusion soon. The warm front is expected to lift through the region with some precipitation ahead of it this afternoon, and subsequently, the cold front will sweep through, bringing the main threat for severe thunderstorms today and tonight. Model guidance suggests instability is present for the main threats, but model soundings also show curved hodographs in the low levels that are causing concern for a tornado risk today. The threat of tornadoes is rather low, thankfully, but a brief, isolated tornado or two are still possible.

After a possibly active day for weather, pleasant weather will stick around the rest of this week due to strong upper-level ridging that will build after the passage of this trough. Breezy conditions can be expected as the trough exits the region on Tuesday with mostly cloudy conditions, but for the rest of the week, temperatures will stay around the high 70s and low 80s with mostly sunny/mostly clear weather.

Even with low probabilities for tornadoes today, as seen from Saturday’s storms, it is imperative to take heed of any warnings from the National Weather Service, be weather-aware today, and have multiple ways to receive warnings!
