Today, a low pressure system over the Great Lakes is going to bring a cold front through. Due to strong upper-level troughing and the assistance of the low-level jet, storms today may be severe, as the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe weather. Hazards include mainly damaging wind gusts and possibly large hail, but the chance for an isolated tornado is there given the wind shear in the environment assisted by the low-level jet. Make sure your devices are charged and you have multiple ways to receive warnings before the storms arrive this afternoon! The Weather Prediction Center has also issued a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall today for the region, as storms will dump upwards of half an inch of rain, with some locally higher amounts. Localized flash flooding will be possible, so be sure you do not attempt to drive through standing water.

After this system passes, a weak high pressure ridge is expected to move in, and things will be rather pleasant on Friday heading into the weekend. This won’t last long after Friday, so enjoy it as another cold front from a low pressure system to our north is anticipated to move through this weekend, bringing more precipitation with it.
