Today, Athens is under a Marginal Risk for severe weather as outlined by the Storm Prediction Center. The hazard with today’s storms will be damaging wind gusts. The threat of hail and tornadoes is very low. The upper-level trough is bringing this unsettled weather to the region once again, and as storms taper off this evening, they will return Friday afternoon into Friday night. The SPC has also issued a Marginal Risk for Friday which includes the same threat of damaging winds. Despite all of these thunderstorms, a Heat Advisory is also in effect starting tomorrow at 11 AM, and ending at 9 PM EDT due to temperatures in the mid-to-high-90s expected. Due to the humidity, the heat index values are also expected to be around 105 degrees, so it will be very uncomfortable.

Moving into the weekend, temperatures will start to cool down some as a cold front turning more stationary is anticipated to move through the region Saturday into Sunday. Temperatures in the low to mid-80s are expected which will be much more enjoyable than today and tomorrow’s temperatures. The chance of showers and thunderstorms will also stick around through Saturday with this front but will taper off Sunday into Monday. This means some much more enjoyable weather! Make sure to stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses as these hot temperatures persist.
