Forecast Discussion
Currently, a big low pressure system is on its way to our area. This low is expected to deliver a strong winter system starting roughly around 1-3 pm today, and lasting through tomorrow. As of right now, Southeast Ohio could experience heavy snow and a chance of mixed precipitation, mainly in the form of sleet, although freezing rain is still possible as well. Currently, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from January 5 at 12:00 PM EST to January 7 at 1:00 AM EST. The snow will likely begin around 1-3 pm, mainly as lighter snow, then becoming heavier later on into the evening hours tonight. From there, it will maintain being heavy all the way through the early AM hours (basically up until about 5-7 AM EST). However, in the very early AM hours (so roughly from 1-4 AM EST), there is a chance that the heavy snow might transition to a mix of sleet, snow, and possibly even freezing rain. After 4 AM, snow is quite likely the form of precipitation we should expect. Around 5-7 AM tomorrow, the snow will begin to lighten, though the heavy snow might return in the afternoon hours tomorrow. Current totals place Athens between 6-12 inches of snow and up to 0.1 inches of ice. Now, these totals are still subject to change if there is any last minute information about the track of the low pressure, as well as depending on how much of the precipitation does transition to sleet or freezing rain.
As for the high and low temperatures over the next several days, it will be in the mid to upper 20s for the highs, and in the teens for the lows, except for Thursday which will have a low in the mid single digits. Cloud cover will also largely persist for the remainder of this week. Be sure to stay warm, follow the Winter Weather Safety guidelines, and stay up to date with your local office and watch for updates here at Scalia Labs. Roadways may be slick, especially under bridges and overpasses. Stay off the roads if applicable if a level 3 road emergency were to be stated. If driving, exercise caution and drive slow. Power outages and tree damage is possible due to ice accumulation. Make sure to have extra supplies.
