Today, Athens is in for some pleasant conditions. Temperatures in the high 70s will be accompanied by clear skies today due to a high-pressure system that has set up in the wake of the trough that brought our last couple of rounds of severe weather. Another deep, neutral trough is expected to push through our region on Thursday, bringing back the chance for some showers and possibly some thunderstorms Thursday night into Friday, but precipitation totals are not expected to be much, and showers will likely remain mostly isolated to somewhat scattered with this weak cold front setup. This trough will also bring some breezy conditions to the area due to the stronger jet pushing through.

Through the extended forecast period, a slight drop in temperatures is expected Friday after the passage of the cold front, but as the trough exits, a strong high-pressure system due to upper-level ridging is anticipated to set up over the Tennesee Valley region, bringing sunny and dry conditions to us. This will also mean a quick jump in temperatures, possibly reaching into the low 90s by the end of the weekend. These temperatures are expected to be above average for this time of year, and precipitation will also likely be below average through the next 6 to 10 days, according to the Climate Prediction Center.
