Forecast Discussion

Currently, a large upper-level trough is making its way over our region. This trough is causing lots of disturbance in our atmosphere and bringing in some moisture from the south, which is going to allow for daily chances of thunderstorms throughout the forecast period. Some of these thunderstorms will likely be severe, with damaging winds and large hail being the main threats, as detailed in the National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook tomorrow. Additionally, the Storm Prediction Center has Athens being in a slight risk of severe weather for Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms appear to be more isolated during the day, and more severe convection will likely occur later in the evening. Tornadoes do not appear to be a threat with any of the storms tomorrow, but make sure you still have a way to receive warnings in the event a tornado or severe thunderstorm warning is issued!

Looking ahead into the beginning of the week, the upper-level trough is still expected to be pushing off to the east, and thunderstorms due to the moisture and daytime heating will be possible in the afternoon hours. High pressure is expected to build in behind this trough after it moves east, but chances for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon hours just due to daytime instability look to stick around through the rest of the week.

Hopefully, rain and thunderstorms will not hinder celebrations this 4th of July, but in any case, be sure to exercise good firework safety and caution when using any of these devices to ensure the safety of you and the others around you. Good firework safety can prevent serious injuries, hearing loss, and fires, and it will keep things fun!
