Forecast Discussion
Over the past 24 hours, over 3 inches of rain have fallen due to an intense low-pressure system moving northeast over the area lifting a warm front last night. The NWS has extended the Flood Warning until 6:15 PM this afternoon as flooding of streams, creeks, rivers, and other low-lying flood prone locations are occurring right now. The Hocking River is currently at 16.92 feet and is projected to rise over 18 feet above action stage and just below flood stage. A Flood Watch is in effect until Monday at 1:00am from the excess runoff flowing into the streams and rivers throughout the day.
Now and through this afternoon, a cold front has moved through the region as temperatures dropped to below freezing and will decrease throughout the day. Due to this, any rain this morning transitioned to snow with accumulations amounting up to 1 to 2 inches. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 7:00 PM this evening. As the low-pressure system moves through, gusty winds are expected up to 35 mph this afternoon. With any excess water on roadways, it is possible for a flash freeze to occur as traveling conditions can be hazardous with slick spots this afternoon. Please exercise caution while driving today.
In the long-term, clouds will linger through much of the week as a closed-low aloft lingers to the north. A low-pressure system to the south will move east in conjunction with a trough that will move through Wednesday into Thursday. Snow accumulations of 2+ inches are possible with this system. Stay tuned for future updates on this system. Once the system moves through, an arctic high will settle in with colder air moving in the region.
