Forecast Discussion
Due to rainy conditions coming in full swing starting Wednesday night, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County. This watch will be in effect from Wednesday at 8 p.m. until Sunday at 8 a.m. Rain totals are expected to range from 4 to 6 inches from Wednesday night to Sunday morning. Be cautious if you come across flooded roadways; turn around and don’t drown. Stay tuned for updates as this system progresses.
Tonight, we can expect cloudy skies with a low of around 40 degrees and Wednesday we can expect some isolated thunderstorms after 11 am and a high in the upper 70s, possibly warming into the low 80s. As we enter into Thursday and the rest of the week we will see highs ranging from the mid-60s into the 70s. Unfortunately, it will be rainy so there will not be many opportunities to enjoy these conditions.
Starting Wednesday night into Thursday we will have a chance for some severe storms prompting the Storm Prediction Center to issue a slight risk of severe weather for Athens. Our main concern here is higher winds and hail but an isolated tornado or two is not completely out of consideration as well. This system is set up almost identically to Sunday’s system, however, there will be less convection to tear it apart causing higher concern regarding potential impacts. Please remain weather aware during this time and have a way to receive warnings. We will mainly see these storms Thursday morning with these conditions changing to rain showers Thursday afternoon. The rain will continue throughout the day Friday and may be heavy at times and even more rain Saturday and Sunday. Thankfully the rain should clear out Monday and open us up for a dry week.
