Dangerously hot heat indexes are expected today and throughout the week, with index values as high as 108 at times. Due to this the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Athens County which will be in effect from 11 am today until 10 pm on Friday.

Hot and sunny weather is in store for us for the remainder of the week with today reaching a high of around 95 degrees with heat indexes as high a 101 degrees. We will continue to warm and by tomorrow and Thursday we will reach our warmest for this period with highs of around 98 degrees.

Due to the extreme heat this week remember to drink plenty of fluids and avoid the outdoors if possible. Make sure you do not leave children unattended in a hot car as car temperatures will reach extreme levels in a matter of a few minutes. As for our furry friends remember that if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pets.
