Forecast Discussion
The National Weather Service has issued a Marginal Risk for severe weather tomorrow, Thursday the 15th, and a Slight Risk for Friday the 16th that includes Athens County. The Hazardous Weather Outlook released from Thursday to Tuesday states, “Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible early Friday morning and Friday evening.”
A low-pressure system has formed in the west and is making its way towards Ohio, bringing chances of thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail. Athens, OH is located within the 2% probability for tornados, so likelihood cannot be ruled out. This is due to a negative-tilting shortwave trough from the west with some southwesterly flow, which results in warmer moist air traveling up from the Gulf. As the warm front passes by from Thursday into Friday, some cooler air aloft will result in some instability for thunderstorms.
