An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until July 3rd at 10 PM. Temperatures during this time are expected to hit the upper-90s with heat index values near 108. Heat related illnesses will increase with a combination of high heat and humidity. These impacts are likely to peak on Thursday. Please review the National Weather Service’s Heat Safety Tips page for additional information on how to stay safe during this time. The Athens County EMA has posted a list of cooling centers across the county, so if you or someone you know does not have reliable access to AC, please don’t hesitate to use these locations to stay safe!

Conditions will remain dry, but hot, for the remainder of the week. Muggy conditions will enhance the heat thanks to the high humidity. While temperatures will start to decrease by Saturday, please remain vigilant to these hot temperatures and stay safe. Continue to drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun as much as you can, remaining in air-conditioned rooms if at all possible. Please check up on relatives and neighbors who may be vulnerable during this time. Do not leave children or pets unattended in vehicles as lethal temperatures could be reached in minutes. Try and walk any pets during the early morning or late evening hours, and please do not walk them on hot surfaces because it may burn their paw pads in doing so.
