Forecast Discussion

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for most of SE Ohio, including Athens County, from Jan. 16 at 10 am until Jan. 17 at 10 am.

A colder airmass from the north will settle into the area today ahead of the well anticipated system this weekend. While the high today will be around 40, this colder air will drop temperatures into the teens this evening and won’t allow highs to reach much above freezing for the remainder of the weekend. The colder temperatures along with clouds will dominate our weather for the next two and a half days, until the system begins to impact our area. Saturday night, this closed low will make its way across the Plains, and by Sunday afternoon, will begin to swing towards the Northeast. Its exact path is still fairly uncertain at this point and will have drastic impacts on the accumulation SE Ohio will see. Despite the uncertainty that still remains, it’s safe to say some snow is likely Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. More precise snowfall estimates will come in the next day as guidance becomes even more clear.
