Forecast Discussion
The NWS has issued an Extreme Heat Watch due to heat indices reaching up to 106 from Sunday through Wednesday evening of next week as an oppressive heat wave is just around the corner.
After several days with scattered showers and storms, a large shift in the weather pattern will turn to a strong ridge of high-pressure for much of the eastern United States. As a result, drier weather will settle in and there will be a break from the rain. However, this high-pressure system will dominate the region and sit there for several days acting as a “heat dome”. A persistent heat wave to start the summer will arise this weekend into next week. Today will be more seasonal for this time of year in the mid-80s, but temperatures will climb into the mid to upper-90s by the end of the weekend into early next week. Friday and Saturday will be less muggy with dewpoints in the mid to upper-60s, but Sunday into next week dewpoints will climb into the mid-70s making it feel oppressive and tropical like. Thus, heat indices can climb above 100 degrees increasing the risk for heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat strokes.
During this time, make sure to drink plenty of fluids and limit time outdoors. If outdoors, limit strenuous activity, take breaks in the shade, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and keep pets off sidewalks and roadways. Make sure to check on friends, family, and neighbors as people are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses include elderly, newborns, children, pregnant women, persons with chronic illnesses and taking any SSRIs. For more information on heat related safety check out this webpage at https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat. Stay tuned for any updates and alerts and please stay cool.
