Forecast Discussion

The NWS Charleston, WV has issued a Heat Advisory from 8am to 8pm today as hot and humid conditions persist with highs in the low-90s and heat indices near 100 degrees. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids if outdoors, take breaks in the shade, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and stay in air conditioning if applicable.

The heat dome that sat over the eastern CONUS region is beginning to break down and the worst of the heat wave has passed for our region. However, hot and humid conditions will still persist today. It will be mostly sunny in the morning becoming partly cloudy in the evening as isolated showers and storms are possible due to the humid conditions at the surface and a trough of low-pressure centered over the Great Lakes region. A cold front will stall closer to central Ohio on Saturday as a higher chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms develop in the afternoon and evening. Clouds will clear out Saturday night into Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds. A stray shower or storm is possible Sunday afternoon and evening. Otherwise, most will remain dry.

Into early next week, another low-pressure system will move over the Great Lakes bringing a cold front along with it Monday night into Tuesday. Again, this will bring another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms. It is possible, especially Friday and Monday; where storms could possibly produce locally damaging wind gusts, small hail, and heavy rainfall which could lead to localized flash flooding, but none are expected to reach severe criteria. Dewpoints will remain in the upper-60s to low-70s with localized regions reaching the mid-70s on Friday. While the worst of the heat is over, it will still feel oppressive outside with the humidity providing instability to sustain any thunderstorms that do develop. Heading into next week once the cold front moves through, less humid and cooler conditions will move in as high-pressure settles in by Wednesday.
