Forecast Discussion
The upcoming winter storm has prompted a Winter Storm Warning to be issued for much of SE Ohio from 7 pm on March 11 until 3 pm on March 12.
High pressure will maintain control for most of the daytime hours on Friday, making for a calm and beautiful day before the action begins tonight. Southerly flow will even aid in providing slightly warmer temperatures than average across much of the region. These pleasant conditions will not last long as a troughing pattern and cold front approach the region quickly tonight.
As the low pressure system progresses along the Appalachian Mountains tonight, SE Ohio will see the system begin as rain, likely sometime around 10 pm or so. A strong cold front with a very pronounced temperature gradient will move in shortly behind the low pressure system. Once the front takes over and temperatures drop below freezing very quickly, the transition from rain to snow will occur, likely not long after the rain begins, but potentially as late as midnight or so. Snow will continue through the overnight hours and into Saturday morning, likely very heavy at times, especially before noon, and finally tapers off around dinnertime. Winds will pick up as the front crosses as well, gusting upwards of 30-40 mph at times, which will drop wind chills into the single digits and create hazardous blowing and drifting snow.
Accumulations from this system depend heavily on how the front progresses and how much the remaining warm air is allowed to win out. Right now, with the set-up that is forecasted, SE Ohio could see around 3″-6″, with more to the SE and less to the NW. Hazardous road conditions are anticipated, especially for the Saturday morning commute. Power outages might also be an issue, but not likely, with the heavy snow and gusty winds.
Stay tuned to our Twitter and Facebook throughout the day as this system approaches.
