Forecast Discussion

A very active weather pattern is in store for this weekend, so enjoy the warmth and sunshine today before wet conditions move in for Saturday and Sunday. The NWS has issued a hazardous weather outlook for southeast Ohio. Conditions will be very dry and warm today with gusty winds up to 20 mph, which will increase the risk for wildfire spread. Make sure to heed all fire burning during the day on Friday. During the evening hours Friday and into Saturday, winds will begin increasing as a very deep low-pressure system sub-980mb (normal pressure is 1013mb) tracks northeast towards the Ohio Valley, which will cause severe weather for much of the central plains and midwest Friday night into Saturday.

This is all due to a negatively tilted trough in conjunction with a cut-off low, that will promote cold air aloft increasing the potential for an unstable atmosphere. Currently, southeast Ohio is under a Marginal risk (level 1 of 5) with the main threats being damaging wind gusts given the strong speed shear with large-scale flow (rapid change in speed with height). Once a warm front moves through Friday into Saturday, the Ohio Valley will be placed under a large warm sector promoting warm, southerly flow allowing for moisture advection to occur from the Gulf of Mexico. A line of storms will move through between 7:00 and 9:00 am Saturday that will decay once it reaches eastern Ohio with the possibility of some heavy rain and scattered storms as the line decays. During the afternoon, the threat for severe weather is conditional as it is entirely dependent on if the atmosphere destabilizes in time for round 2 in the evening hours as the cold front moves through Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

Dewpoints will likely be near 60 degrees with more moisture further south, where the greater risk for tornadoes are in the Tennessee Valley and areas further south, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out due to the upper-level forcing. The second line of storms will track northeast providing areas of torrential downpours within the line of storms and wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely especially in higher elevations as the cyclone tracks northeast. As the line of storms move through, higher wind gusts are possible. Once the cold front moves through, colder and drier air will settle in early in the work week with highs in the low-50s, but quickly climb back into the 60s once high-pressure settles in.
