A deep upper-level trough will push through the Ohio Valley today and continue to deepen due to the increase of upper-level wind speeds. This is associated with a low-pressure system at the surface located north over the Great Lakes. A cold front along the low-pressure will move through this evening around sundown. Due to daytime heating, dewpoints in the 60s, and CAPE values up to 1000 J/kg, there is sufficient instability for showers and thunderstorms to develop. Ahead of the cold front, there is a chance for discrete clusters of storms to form, but as the front pushes through in the evening, it will turn more linear. The SPC has Athens under a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather with the main threat being gusty winds and hail.

A chance for showers will continue through early Saturday morning once the cold front moves through. Clouds will linger through the morning, but begin to clear out in the afternoon and evening. Highs will drop to the low to mid-70s for the weekend with very chilly nights in the low to mid-40s. This is due to high-pressure settling in behind the cold front giving way to drier and cooler conditions heading into the early work week. As high-pressure dominates, high temperatures will begin warming back well into the 80s.
