Forecast Discussion

A couple bands of showers are currently skirting the forecast area this morning. There is a slight chance these will impact the Athens area before 10 AM. Then, very strong warm air advection from 5-10 mph winds from the south along with solar heating will increase temperatures to the low 70s today! With such warming and increasing moisture in place, isolated pop-up showers will also be possible this afternoon before sunset. Once the sun goes down tonight, temperatures will cool to around 50 F with partly cloudy skies in modest 5-10 mph winds out of the south.

As winds continue to be moderate out of the south, Tuesday will warm up even more with highs reaching to the 80s! Mostly cloudy skies with isolated breaks of sunshine will dominate the daytime, but again, with strong heating and a good amount of moisture in place, isolated pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon. This chance will continue into the overnight hours as an approaching storm system starts moving into the area.

Wednesday is in our extended forecast range, however, the Storm Prediction Center has outlined Athens, and much of southeast Ohio, in a slight risk for severe thunderstorms. This makes sense as we will be reaching the mid-80s on Wednesday despite ample cloud cover for the day. Showers and thunderstorms, some severe, will be possible during the afternoon into the evening, then prolonged rain overnight is expected. Details are subject to change in the next few days, so stay tuned for updates! Once the storm system clears, temperatures will cool to around 60 for highs and the mid-30s for lows Thursday and Friday with partly cloudy skies.
