Hazardous Weather Outlook

Filtered sunshine through increasing mid-level cloudiness will develop scattered showers and thunderstorms by this afternoon, with storm motion being relatively slow. Risk for severe storms will be limited by the lack of shear, but gusty winds will still be a possibility. Additional showers and thunderstorms will continue tonight as a cold front slowly makes its way into the region. Tropical moisture from Hurricane Ida will arrive early in the day Tuesday as the outer rain bands spread into the area by the afternoon. Tuesday night into Wednesday morning is when the heaviest rainfall will occur as Ida interacts with the front. A general 2 to 4 inches of rain with higher amounts up to 6 inches in some areas will be possible. From this, a flash flood watch has been issued for Athens county from 2:00pm, August 31st, to 2:00pm, September 1st. The bulk of precipitation associated with Ida will shift eastward on Thursday. Labor Day weekend will feature dominating upper level ridging over the southern United States, providing drier air in the area through the majority of the weekend. There will be a slight chance for showers on Sunday as a weak disturbance moves through the upper portions of the ridge. Temperatures will be right around seasonable for the beginning of September as the ridge readjusts to the east.
