Forecast Discussion

High-pressure will settle in at the surface briefly during the day on Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds. The cut-off low to the northeast and high-pressure will give westerly flow at the surface with lingering partly cloudy skies before clearing Saturday night. However, a Colorado Low forming over the Rockies will make its way to the east quickly through the Tennessee Valley. Depending on the track of the low and its intensity, there is a possibility for heavy snow as well as a mix of freezing rain and sleet.

The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from January 5 at 7:00 AM EST to January 6 at 7:00 PM EST. It is likely heavy snow will begin around the late afternoon on Sunday as clouds increase throughout the day. A transition from snow to sleet is possible during the morning commute on Monday before transitioning back to snow early Monday afternoon. Chances for snow will continue Monday evening before tapering off Monday night with possible lingering flurries overnight. As of right now, 5 to 8 inches of snow are possible with a quarter of an inch of ice with isolated higher amounts at higher elevations. However, this is subject to change as the system approaches. It is advised to follow Winter Weather Safety guidelines and stay up to date with your local office and watch for updates here at Scalia Labs. Roadways may be slick, especially under bridges and overpasses. Stay off the roads if applicable if a level 3 road emergency were to be stated. If driving, exercise caution and drive slow. Power outages and tree damage is possible due to ice accumulation. Make sure to have extra supplies. Stay tuned for this evening for more updates!

Slight upper-level troughing will linger through Wednesday with periods of clouds and sun. Cold air will stick around behind the system with highs reaching only the mid-20s and lows dropping to the teens and even single digits as the week progresses. Make sure to stay bundled up during this week!
