Forecast Discussion
An intense cooling trend is expected Sunday night into early next week. As high-pressure sits over Athens, the skies will remain mostly clear with stable conditions today into tonight, but a low-pressure system accompanied by a cold front will quickly make its way through late Sunday. This will bring the chance for rain, but more importantly gusty winds shifting from the southwest into the west-northwest as the cold front passes over us near 8 pm Sunday. Steady winds are expected to be between 10 and 15 mph, but gusts could reach as high as 25 mph. The small chance for showers, and maybe a rumble of thunder, will be present Sunday as well.
A deep trough in the upper atmosphere will allow for temperatures to drop dramatically. This trough will bring fridged air from Canada down into Athens keeping it cold until Thursday, though Thursday will still be quite chilly. Prepare to bring in any outdoor plants inside as frost could accumulate much of next week.
