The heat dome lingers through mid-next week as temperatures reach the low to mid-90s into next week with heat indices up to 103 possible. It will feel very oppressive outside with a tropical-like airmass sitting over the region with dewpoints in the low to mid-70s. Make sure to stay hydrated, take breaks, wear light-colored and loose-fit clothing and keep an eye on neighbors and relatives; especially those more susceptible to heat. Today, however, can see a chance for showers and thunderstorms as a low-pressure system over the Great Lakes moves off to the northeast. Since southeast Ohio is on the edge of the heat dome, pop-up isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening. Most could remain dry, but any that do see showers could see a brief relief from the heat, but with possible scattered flash flooding due to slow-moving heavy rain. Thus, a slight risk (level 2 of 4) for excessive rain has been issued for the region. If you encounter a flooded roadway, make sure to turn around and don’t drown! Isolated pop-up showers and storms could occur Monday and Tuesday, but mostly everyone could remain dry.

Relief from the heatwave will come Wednesday into Thursday as a cold front sweeps south over the Midwest bringing a strong Canadian high-pressure system behind it. Rain showers could develop ahead of the front Wednesday evening into Thursday evening with possible localized heavy rainfall as the WPC has issued a marginal risk (level 1 of 4) for excessive rain for possible isolated flash flooding. Luckily, behind the front, cooler and drier air will settle into the region with it feeling comfortable and possibly early fall-like. Temperatures could remain below average even into the first week of August!
