Forecast Discussion

Flash Flood Watch in effect from August 31, 2:00pm EDT until September 1, 8:00pm EDT

Hazardous Weather Outlook

Mainly light rain will begin to overtake the area this morning as moisture associated with Ida begins to move in. With low clouds and light rain in place, there will be little chance for surface heating to generate much instability, except for places closer to the cold frontal position. This should form a line of showers and storms which could produce locally heavy downpours. There will likely be a continuous band of moderate to heavy rain tonight heading into Wednesday morning, supporting flash flooding concerns with 2 to 4 inches of rainfall anticipated to fall throughout this event. Locally higher amounts up to 6 inches will be possible as well. From this, a flash flood watch has been issued from Tuesday, August 31st at 2:00pm, to Wednesday, September 1st at 8:00pm. The remnants of Ida will quickly move out of the area overnight Wednesday into Thursday as it becomes swept up by westerly flow. Increased subsidence and much cooler air will drop down from the Great Lakes and promote drier conditions for the end of the work week and into the holiday weekend. A few upper level disturbances will pass through beginning on Sunday, with current projections showing a surface cold front arriving Sunday afternoon and exiting to the east overnight. Another round of afternoon showers and thunderstorms looks likely on Monday as an upper level low drops down into the Northeast. Temperatures will start off much cooler than what was seen last weekend, but should gradually climb back up to near average later in the holiday weekend.
