Technical Forecast Discussion Meet the Forecaster

Forecast Discussion

An active pattern is setting up in the Midwest into the Appalachian Foothills region here in Southeast Ohio over the next couple of days. An incoming low-pressure system is going to bring warm temperatures behind a warm front, but a strong cold front following warmer air is going to bring thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. Athens is under a Slight Risk for severe weather with the greatest threat being severe hail (≥ 0.75″), damaging wind gusts, and small chance of a tornado. These are all associated with atmospheric instability and strong forcing along the warm initially developing in the late evening, and the cold front moving through early morning Wednesday. More details about the severe weather setup are available in the Technical Discussion linked above. Rain showers and some thunderstorms will continue into tomorrow, and then transition to light snow showers as the temperature drops below freezing behind the cold front tomorrow night into Thursday.

In the long term, a stark drop in temperatures behind the cold front will be apparent with highs in the mid-to-high 40s, and overnight lows in the low-to-mid-20s for the next couple of days. Clearer and drier weather will settle in Thursday as high pressure builds in behind the cold front, but some slight chances for rain to return on Friday evening as a small disturbance moves through. Conditions still look to be clear on Saturday, despite some rain on Friday! Stay tuned to our social media pages and local sources including the National Weather Service for watches and warnings during the threat of severe weather!
