Forecast Discussion

As of 8 pm EST, Athens is still under an Extreme Cold Watch from 4 am EST Monday, January 20th to 12 pm EST Wednesday, January 22nd. Earlier today, NWS Charleston issued a Winter Weather Advisory between 1 am EST Sunday, January 19th to 8 am EST Monday, January 20th. The concern regarding the Winter Weather Advisory is that we are expecting between 1 to 3 inches of snow tonight into tomorrow. Another hazard to be aware of moving into Monday is the potential for a flash freeze. What is a flash freeze? A flash freeze is when air temperatures plummet rapidly from above freezing to below freezing in just a few hours. All of the rain and snow melt we received today is at risk of freezing and causing hazardous walking and driving conditions into Monday. Please heed caution Sunday night and Monday as temperatures continue to dive well-below freezing because of this intense upper-level trough trapping arctic air over the region.
