Forecast Discussion

Today SE Ohio is under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms. A few scattered showers that may become severe are expected around and a little after midnight. Temperatures will only drop into the upper 60s.

Another round of showers and thunderstorms are expected as we look into tomorrow, starting around 5 am and continuing throughout the day. SE Ohio is under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms as of this post and is just bordering the enhanced risk. As of the 18Z HRRR run, it looks like the majority of the instability will remain to our SE, but the model does suggest up to 1800 J/kg of MLCAPE, which may turn a few storms severe throughout the day. Athens County is just within the 5% tornado risk and 15% risks for severe wind (wind gusts up to 58 mph) and severe hail (hail diameter of 1 inch or greater). Winds are expected to range between 10-15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. Temperatures will peak into the mid-80s during the afternoon. The severe thunderstorm threat will continue into the nighttime hours but is not expected to be as widespread. Make sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings Monday and stay weather aware.

There will be a small chance for some rain showers on Tuesday, but it should remain mostly dry. Temperatures will peak into the low 80s. Wednesday will have some sunny skies, but unfortunately, that will not last as an upper-level shortwave is expected to move through Thursday, bringing another round of rain, which will also linger into Friday.
