Forecast Discussion

A humid and unstable air mass will linger over Athens, Ohio tonight, supporting increased cloud coverage and patchy fog in the early morning hours. Attention then turns to Monday, when a more significant severe weather threat emerges. Athens is outlined in a slight risk for severe thunderstorms by the Storm Prediction Center. A surface cold front and accompanying upper-level trough will approach from the west, tapping into a moist and unstable environment. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop by the afternoon and continue into the evening hours. These storms may become organized, with the potential for damaging wind gusts, isolated large hail, and even a few tornadoes. Localized flash flooding will also be a concern in areas that see repeated rounds of heavy rainfall. Given the dynamics in place, Monday will require close monitoring for any watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service, and residents should be prepared to act quickly should severe weather approach. By Tuesday, the front will push east of the area, ushering in a drier and more stable air mass. Skies will begin to clear, and humidity levels will drop, leading to a pleasant and quieter weather pattern through midweek. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be dry with abundant sunshine and gradually warming conditions. By Friday, a return of southerly flow may increase temperatures and moisture slightly, though no organized thunderstorm activity is anticipated at this time. Overall, after Monday’s active weather, the remainder of the week looks calm and seasonably warm.
