Technical Forecast Discussion

Short-term Forecast (Sunday 10/1/2023 through Wednesday 10/4/2023):

The short-term period looks to be incredibly pleasant and warm as Athens will be under a strong upper-level ridge. The subsidence, or downward motion associated with this ridge will allow for clear, sunny skies and as a result warmer temperatures in the low-to-mid-80s. Furthermore, due to Athens’s location within the surface high pressure, northeasterly to easterly winds are expected during the period.

Long-term Forecast (Thursday 10/5/2023 through Saturday 10/7/2023):

Conditions are expected to change starting Thursday with the entrance of a strong low-pressure system. Skies will become overcast but the afternoon should remain dry ahead of the cold front. By Thursday evening, a cold front will pass through bringing widespread rain showers and much cooler air to the region. Fortunately, due to the nighttime occurrence of these showers, the atmosphere will be fairly stable with large CIN and small CAPE values. Therefore, these showers should remain sub-severe. Friday rain showers should remain to our north and cloud cover will begin to clear as surface high pressure builds in behind the surface low pressure. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the low 70s. Saturday also looks to remain dry with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 60s as cold air continues to be brought into the region through the strong and persistent upper-level trough.

Synopsis:

Sunday through Wednesday: Sunny and warm!

Thursday into Thursday night: Cloudy and dry, but a cold front will move through during the late evening hours with rain.

Friday and Saturday: High pressure builds back in, and skies begin to clear with cooler temperatures in the low 70s Friday and then low 60s Saturday.
