Issued: 8pm on Sunday, October 6th 2024

Technical Forecast Discussion

Short-term Forecast (Sunday 10/06/2024 through Tuesday 10/08/2024):

A cold front extending off a low pressure system to our north will deliver the chance for some rain and possibly some strong thunderstorms before 9pm this Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Athens and surrounding counties due to the chance of some of these storms to be severe. The main concerns are the chance for some damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours. Most of these storms in recent models runs appear to stay to our north but are still note worthy in the chance that this changes. Following the passage of this cold front, a drier air mass will move in along with high pressure allowing skies to clear overnight. Cooler conditions are ahead following this front with daytime high in the low 70s and overnight lows in the brisk low 40s due to clear skies and limited surface mixing.

Long-term Forecast (Wednesday 10/09/2024 through Saturday 10/12/2024):

Surface high pressure and a drier air mass will remain over the region for the rest of the week providing clear skies and a fairly uneventful forecast. Due to some northwesterly flow, some Canadian cool and dry air will enter the region keeping our temperatures modest in the low 70s and overnight lows in the low 40s. The coolest day will be Thursday and Thursday night.
