Forecast Discussion

Snow will be moving into the region overnight, spurred by a developing low pressure system moving northeastward through the Appalachian Mountains. A few spots of snow showers are possible in the early evening, though more constant snow will develop later. Beginning a little after midnight, it will reach its heaviest rates of snowfall around 3 AM, but will still be somewhat steady around the hours of the morning commute and into the later morning of Friday. Accumulations by that time could total around 2 – 4 inches or so, but throughout Friday afternoon, additional accumulations of scattered snow showers could up to an additional half inch at most. Areas closer to the border of West Virginia and Ohio may receive totals closer to the upper range of accumulations mentioned earlier, while areas more west of Athens County may receive less accumulation. Locally higher amounts may be possible in areas of higher elevation.

Friday evening, a chance of isolated flurries and snow showers is possible due to the passing system, though any accumulations will be marginal. Any chances of snow will fully taper off by Saturday, though more arctic air in the region will plunge temperatures to a high in the low 20s. Thankfully, a warmup is imminent, as strong high pressure moves in along a very prominent ridge. Temperatures in the early week could rise to the mid 40s, though by Tuesday, some showers are possible due to another developing low pressure system.
