Athens has been upgraded to a slight risk for excessive rainfall with the chance for 1.75-2.0″ of rain tonight as multiple rounds of heavy rain impact the area. Please heed caution for any potential flash flooding and keep an eye for any potential social media updates with this risk. Landslides may be an issue due to the possibility of saturated soils if flash flooding becomes an issue, so please also heed caution if you plan on driving near any steep slopes. Remember: turn around, don’t drown!

Tonight’s showers may also bring rounds of thunderstorms as well, and the Storm Prediction Center has put Athens in a Marginal Risk (1/5) for severe weather today. The main threat today is expected to be strong to severe wind gusts. Showers may linger into Saturday but will move out of the area by the overnight hours before a dry spell hits the region. Warm air will move in from the south, allowing our temperatures to soar back into the lower-90s by early next week. Please plan ahead for hot temperatures and muggy conditions if you have any plans outdoors next week!
