Forecast Discussion

Weak meridional flow in the upper level jet will continue to be the driving force behind our weather. An upper level trough that allowed an arctic air-mass to move into the area over the past couple of days will move off to the east. Upstream from this trough, an upper level jet streak will begin to form, allowing an area of low pressure to develop, and move into the region in the middle of the day tomorrow. Clouds will thicken throughout the day today and tonight because of this feature. This feature will also bring chances of rain and snow to the area tomorrow around lunch time. Snow accumulations on the high end should generally be light–around 1-3 inches, with the heaviest accumulations further south and west, where winter weather advisories are in effect. In Athens proper, only expect about an inch of snow. After 12 PM, the majority of the precipitation should change to rain. The rain will clear out, but clouds will remain overhead as another system bringing rain moves into the area for Sunday.
