Forecast Discussion

Today closes with a beautiful sunset with some scattered clouds, which will persist overnight. Temperatures will drop to a low of 65 degrees, with winds from the south-southwest at 0 to 5 mph. In the very early morning hours, there is a very slim chance of a localized pop up storm, but for the most part, Thursday will begin with some sun and clouds. These conditions, however, will soon change, as a chance for severe weather enters the region in the afternoon.

Morning sunshine, temperatures around 87 degrees, and dew points in the 70s will all contribute to growing instability in the area. A prominent low over the Hudson bay, combined with a surface low near the Great Lakes, will swing a weak cold front through southeastern Ohio in the afternoon. A few storms may fire up as early as noon, but by the late afternoon, scattered storms will be moving eastward through much of the region as the cold front forces the air to lift and condense. Hazards include hail, potentially large, and damaging wind gusts. Additionally, due to a low level jet brought on by the surface low, some shear in the environment could potentially produce a few weak spin-up tornadoes within supercells, should the conditions be favorable. Rain up to a half inch is also possible, so be wary of going outside during this time period. By the later evening, much of these storms will have moved out, excluding a few isolated showers.

Overnight, conditions will calm once more, as temperatures drop to 67 degrees. Clouds will be mostly dominant, with a few breaks here and there. Winds from the southwest will drop to 5-10 mph, and come Friday, will then shift to the west. Clouds on Friday morning will eventually begin to break by the afternoon into evening, and pressure rises once more for another hot day in southeastern Ohio. Don’t get too comfortable, however, as throughout the weekend and beginning of the week, several low pressure systems will create chances for scattered thunderstorms, while temperatures remain in the upper 80s.
