Currently, we are under a massive area of high pressure (centered in Southern Canada and the Northeastern US), and as a result of this high pressure, we are experiencing relatively sunny skies. This high pressure will stay relatively within our area throughout the day today. However, as the high pressure moves to the east, we will see the clouds gradually returning tonight, through tomorrow, and into tomorrow night. Tomorrow night could also see some precipitation in the form of rain as a low pressure system moves into our area. However, as the system tries to move east across our area, the system kind of stalls out. This will enable the system to keep dumping rain on our area all through Christmas Eve and Christmas, or at least that would be the case if the corridor of precipitation, which might actually consist of fairly light precipitation, wasn’t along the I-70 corridor across Ohio. Because of where the system is expected to stall out, Athens and Southern Ohio in general have less of a chance of seeing precipitation on both Christmas Eve and Christmas compared to Columbus, Ohio, which is along the I-70 corridor. The low pressure system that is stalled out will eventually move out on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. Thursday will see a slight breakage in cloud cover, but for the most part, it will remain cloudy. So, there probably won’t be a white Christmas this year. As for the temperatures, it will be 33 for the high today and a low of 20, but both the high and low temperatures will increase over the next several days to the point where it will be in the mid 50s for the high and in the upper 30s for the low on Thursday.
