Forecast Discussion
New Year’s Day will be breezy and seasonably cold with a slight chance of rain and snow showers on the back edge of a storm system centered well to our northeast. An area of low pressure moves through Thursday night into Friday, bringing more snow chances with it. Any accumulation from this system would be light, but nonetheless, it could cause slick spots on roadways during that period. Then, a marginally colder air mass moves in for Saturday, where the high will only be in the upper-20s, and the low will plunge into the mid-teens. Sunday will be a bit warmer, but that day will also feature the beginning of a potentially more significant system that could bring widespread snow accumulations throughout the region. Not much is known about the precise timing or details yet, but the storm will begin impacting the Athens area starting Sunday morning, tapering into Monday night.
