The NWS Storm Prediction Center has Athens county in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather today and tomorrow. Severe winds are the major risk as thunderstorms are likely in the evening to early morning Monday.

Today will be a warm and slightly cloudier day as a warm front helps support thunderstorms moving eastward into our region. Southerly winds will help bring up moisture from the south and will help the rain and thunderstorm chances that continue from this evening into the beginning of the week. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has Athens, OH in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) on the Excessive Rain Outlook for Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week for possible isolated flash floods. A cold front will pick up the slack and continue pushing rain showers from Tuesday before a low-pressure system feeds the rain showers into the later week. Temperatures this week, however, are looking to settle in the mid-70s from consistent cloud cover and rain showers.

On the other hand, the upcoming rain may potentially decrease Athens county’s current D1 Moderate Drought level to a D0. The U.S. Drought Monitor will update conditions on Thursday after our wet start to the week.
