Forecast Discussion
The NWS has issued a Flood Watch in effect from 1pm this afternoon through Monday morning as localized flash flooding is possible due to excess runoff from any heavy rainfall. Stay tuned for updates!
Another round of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are possible as a cold front moves south over the Ohio Valley. The SPC has southeast Ohio under a marginal (level 1 of 5) for severe weather with the main hazards being isolated/localized damaging wind gusts with a secondary threat of heavy rainfall that can cause areas of localized flash flooding. With this in mind, we are also under a slight risk (level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall. Due to already saturated soils from previous rainfall, any heavy rain that does fall will cause excess runoff and increase flash flood risk in flood-prone areas such as low-lying areas, urban locations, and locations near creeks, streams, or rivers. If you see flooded roadways, make sure to turn around and don’t drown! Many flood-related deaths are in vehicles and you never know what the road conditions are underneath.
Luckily, the rain will finally come to an end after chances for showers and storms taper off Sunday night into Monday morning. A stray morning shower is possible Monday morning, but otherwise clouds could stick around as the front stalls in southern Ohio. While Sunday and Sunday night remain muggy with dewpoints in the low to mid-70s, a bit of relief from the tropical-like air is on the way as we will be located north of the tropical airmass with drier conditions moving in as the warm, moist air trends more south. Thus, a ridge of high-pressure will fill into the region with drier conditions, but a warming trend during the week with reaching the low-90s by mid-week. However, muggy conditions will return mid-week as heat indices could reach the mid to upper-90s.
