The National Weather Service has put Athens under an extreme heat warning from June 22 at 12:00 pm to June 25 at 8:00 pm EDT. Please take extra precautions if you must be outside these next few days. Heat index values could exceed 100 degrees and the risk for heat-related illnesses will significantly increase because of this heatwave. If at all possible, please do not make any unnecessary outdoor plans and stay inside an air-conditioned building if possible. If outdoor work is required, please take frequent resting periods in a shaded area or in an air-conditioned room, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Make sure pets are outside as little as possible and never leave a child or pet unattended in a car for any reason. Please know the signs of heat stroke in the case of an emergency which may include, but are not limited to, a lack of sweating, red, hot, dry skin, a throbbing headache, a rapid and strong pulse, and unconsciousness. Heat stroke is an emergency and can be fatal if not treated immediately! Please do not hesitate to dial 9-1-1 if you or someone else displays these symptoms. Otherwise, this intense heatwave is unfortunately expected to remain for much of this upcoming week as high-pressure remains to sit over the region. Sunny skies and minimal wind will make the heat uncomfortable, but thankfully relative humidity may not make it unbearable. Nonetheless, please be cautious this week and reconsider any outdoor plans if possible. Extreme heat is nature’s #1 killer above tornadoes and hurricanes!
