Technical Forecast Discussion
Key Messages:
- The short-term is expected to remain calm and stable even as acold front pass over the region Thursday.
- Stable conditions will continue through much of the long-term as well, but more precipitation may return on Wednesday.
- Additionally, warmer temperatures will likely move into southeastern Ohio Tuesday and Wednesday.
Short-Term Forecast (Thursday 12/03/2025 through Saturday 12/06/2025):
Zonal, stable conditions are expected to continue through the short-term. A cold front passing through Thursday morning could bring the chance for snow but also could allow Thursday night lows to drop into the teens as cloud cover dissipates. High-pressure continues to dominate over the state, disallowing much to occur during this time. 500 mb heights are expected to remain fairly steady, though could begin rising slightly as we move into Saturday. Minimal activity is expected during the short-term as temperatures only trend a few degrees warmer, winds fairly calm, save for Thursday as a cold front passes over the region, and chances for precipitation remain low.
Long-Term Forecast (Sunday 12/07/2025 through Wednesday 12/10/2025):
Temperatures will steadily track downwards beginning Sunday when yet another cold front crosses over the state. We may see temperatures reach the lower-30s on Monday but thankfully may rebound Tuesday and Wednesday. A warm front associated with a surface low will overtake the state Tuesday and Wednesday, allowing for warmer southwesterly air to briefly envelope much of the state. A shortwave associated with this low will pass just north of the state, though will rapidly exit eastward by late Tuesday. However, a deeper shortwave will follow almost immediately after the departure of the previous one. This shortwave will cover the entire state, and, with both shortwaves, will see heights fall quite rapidly. A cluster of moisture will move through, allowing for any convective lifting to produce the possibility for precipitation Wednesday especially. Depending on how this surface low aligns latitudinally will determine whether we’ll have a higher likelihood for rain or any type of frozen precipitation. If this low digs further south, we could see snow or some form of rain-snow mix. If it continues to remain fairly north of southeastern Ohio, we’d likely only experience rain. However, it is currently too early to confidently determine these odds.
