Unfortunately, the remainder of the week is expected to be soggy and unpleasant. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) currently has Athens and the rest of southeastern Ohio under a marginal risk for severe weather today. Any storms to develop will likely cluster and hit in the afternoon, with even the risk of locally damaging downbursts. Downbursts are strong, downward and outward rushes of air originating from a thunderstorm. They will spread outward in all directions and can cause minor damage from these strong wind gusts. By Thursday evening into Friday, a cold front will move through and drop our temperatures a comfortable amount. The presence of a low-pressure system at the surface along the Ohio River will keep the chances for rain to persist into Friday morning. The greatest chance for rain Friday will be in the morning, though some showers could still linger throughout the remainder of the day.

By Saturday, a shortwave trough will move through the region, and with it a substantial possibility of rain. The greatest chance for showers and storms is likely going to be in the early afternoon, however, cells could develop at any point throughout the day. These storm chances will roll-over into Sunday as a mid-latitude cyclone pushes eastward, but the chances for storms are slightly less than Saturday.
