Forecast Discussion

Enjoy today, because it is going to be the last day of semi-pleasant temperatures we’ll see for a little while. A potentially strong winter system, aided by a STEEP cold front is going to bring lots of things to us beginning Thursday night. Among them will be plenty of precipitation, which will likely start out as a rain-snow mix and transition to more wintry precipitation when it’s below freezing at nighttime and is more likely to be rain during the day when temperatures are over freezing. But nevertheless, after the front hits, it will be not only unpleasantly cold but we are expected to see wind gusts up to 30mph (or higher!) This will result in dangerously low wind chills, especially at nighttime, as well the the potential for the flash freezing of sidewalks and roads. There is a strong liklihood your holiday travel plans will be impacted, so ensure you have backup options and the ability to keep yourself safe if you decide to press on with travel.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the storm, and Scalia Laboratory will continue to cover it and pay attention to observations and recent model updates through today, tomorrow, and Friday where we’ll have to opportunity to see some snow accumulation on top of all of this due to freezing temperatures and seeing the back end of the low pressure system swirling back into the region once again.

After the winter storm, expect temperatures to remain bitterly cold, with intense winds still potentially present through Christmas Day, especially during nights. There will be a slight warming trend after the storm, but as of right now, our focus is on delivering the best possible forecast regarding the upcoming storm, so please stay tuned.
