Technical Forecast Discussion
Short-Term Forecast (Sunday 09/28/2025 through Tuesday 09/30/2025)
A major ridge will continue over the region with an expectation to build even further into Tuesday. High-pressure will be a major feature for this forecast and into the long-term, keeping conditions stable in the area. Chances for precipitation are low for both the short- and long-term, however, Tropical Storm Imelda (as of this posted forecast) may be strong enough to push accumulated clouds northwest into Appalachia and parts of the Athens area. Daytime temperatures could trend slightly downward into the lower-80s during the short-term, though fairly sunny skies could make it feel uncomfortable. Thankfully, however, surface relative humidity values are expected to remain relatively comfortable for the most part. Much of the atmosphere will also remain dry, though a slight bit of moisture at 850 and 300 mb may be present during this time as well. Upper-level heights will remain fairly stable with a hint of decline as T.S Imelda follows the East Coast on Tuesday.
Long-Term Forecast (Wednesday 10/01/2025 through Saturday 09/37/2025)
Temperatures are likely to continue a downward trend for the remainder of the week and forecast. With a continued lack of precipitation, drought conditions are likely to persist through the season unless a major rain event occurs. Atmospheric heights will remain fairly stable, aided by this major ridge aloft as a major high-pressure dome sits atop the eastern United States. While a slight negative temperature trend could occur this week, the intense high-pressure and upper-level ridge help majorly combat any further decrease in temperatures. Any unsettled weather is not expected for the foreseeable future, so continuing dry conditions will persist and further worsen drought in the state. Cloud cover will remain minimal, so daytime heating will continue to stabilize temperatures in the lower-80s to upper-70s for the remainder of the forecast.
