As many of you have heard by now, much of Athens and the surrounding area will be expecting snow. The National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Athens from “4 AM Friday to 10 AM Saturday”. What does this mean for residents? A winter weather advisory is issued when wintery conditions are expected but are not hazardous enough to warrant a warning. However, do keep in mind that these conditions should still be taken seriously no matter the warning type. Slippery road conditions from today’s system should be expected both in the morning and evening commutes. Jumping to Sunday and Monday, yet another system could bring snow for much of Ohio. As of this morning it is too early to gauge specific impacts, but models currently show southern Ohio to sit at the left exit region of an upper-level jet streak. Combined with the low-pressure system harboring this snowstorm having the possibility of moving just south of Ohio, we very well have the possibility of having a decent snow event. The positioning of the jet-streak will allow rising motion to occur, and the ample moisture content in the atmosphere by that point will allow clouds to form and precipitation to fall. However, I cannot stress this enough that it is too early to tell snow fall amounts, if any, for Monday’s system. Please make sure you keep up to date with weather conditions these next few days.
